Marta Stewart is undeniably a well-liked personality, boasting a global fan base and followers.
However, she has recently faced criticism for a social media post made during her trip to Greenland, which many deem as “tone-deaf.”
Despite receiving widespread acclaim for her participation in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in May, the 82-year-old’s latest Instagram post has failed to elicit the same positive response.
On August 29, Stewart shared a photo from her cruise along the east coast of Greenland. In the picture, the businesswoman and TV personality can be seen enjoying a cocktail, accompanied by the caption:
“End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of Greenland. We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.”
Although Stewart likely intended the post to be harmless, it quickly drew criticism from followers who found her use of a “small iceberg” for her drink inappropriate.
Many expressed their disapproval in the comments, pointing out the insensitivity of referencing a small iceberg when the “ice caps are melting.”
One Instagram user wrote, “Martha, the ice caps are melting; don’t put them in your drink.”
Another commented, “I generally love Martha and the excesses of her life because it’s about beautiful gardens, homes, and food, but wealthy white people drinking their iceberg cocktails while the planet is in flames is a bit tone-deaf.”
A third remarked, “So as the climate warms due to the profits of a couple thousand people, billionaires vacation to the melting icebergs, scoop them up and use them to keep their cocktails cold. That sounds like a line from a dystopian novel. Can’t make this shit up lol.”
“Global warming and melting ice caps but we need glacier ice for cocktails?! Talk about tone-deaf. Been a fan for years, but I’ve seen enough caviar lately as I struggle to buy groceries that I’m out,” said a fourth.
In May, Stewart made headlines for her historic appearance in daring swimsuits on the cover of Sports Illustrated. At the time, she shared details of her wellness routine, emphasizing a clean lifestyle with a good diet, regular exercise, and healthy skincare practices.
During her keynote speech in Las Vegas, Stewart expressed gratitude for the positive response to her “authentic” Sports Illustrated cover, noting that it inspired women of all ages.
