When Dani and Nathan met in high school, they immediately felt a deep connection, believing they were destined for each other. After a few years of dating, they got married and eagerly anticipated a joyful life together. However, things began to change for Nathan just two years into their marriage.

Dani was unsure if Nathan’s change in behavior was related to the arrival of their baby girl. Despite his criticisms, Nathan was a wonderful father, which made her doubt that their daughter’s presence was the cause of his discontent with her.

Nathan started to express dissatisfaction with Dani’s appearance, urging her to put more effort into her looks. “You’ve just let yourself go, Dani,” he said. “Always in those frumpy clothes. Do you think you’ll keep the spark alive like that?”

He also accused her of not being the best mother, despite the fact that she worked from home and spent a lot of time with their daughter, Ellie.

“You’re always behind that computer screen. Do you even give Ellie enough attention? It doesn’t seem like it. She’s always alone when I come home from work,” he said.

Dani did her best to make him happy, but she eventually gave up because Nathan was never satisfied with whatever she did.

As she watched their marriage deteriorate, Dani decided to let go because she lacked the strength to battle something that only existed in her husband’s mind.

One day, Nathan informed Dani that he had a new job opportunity and that they needed to relocate. With Ellie in first grade and her own work being remote, Dani agreed to the move. She secretly hoped that a change of scenery might positively impact their marriage.

Ellie was enrolled in a new school, but as the days went by, Dani noticed that her daughter started coming home upset. One day, she even found Ellie crying in her room.

“Honey, what happened?” Dani asked, worried.

“I don’t want Miss Allen to be my mother! I want you to be my mother!” Ellie sobbed.

A chill ran through Dani. Miss Allen was Ellie’s teacher.

“Why would she become your mother?” Dani asked, confused.

With tears streaming down her face, Ellie began to share what she had heard over the past few days. As she spoke, it seemed as though a weight was being lifted from her shoulders.

“Yesterday, when Dad picked me up from school, Miss Allen told me to wait by the door while she talked to him. I didn’t hear everything, but I heard her say that she’d be a better mom to me. Dad laughed when she said that.”

Nathan was having an affair.

That evening, after making sure Ellie was asleep, Dani poured Nathan a drink.

“So,” she began, “Miss Allen seems really good with Ellie.”

“Really?” he asked, his eyes lighting up. “I knew Ellie liked her…”

“Enough for Miss Allen to be her new mom?” Dani asked. “What’s going on, and don’t you dare lie to me.”

Nathan looked at the floor, too ashamed to meet her gaze. He confessed that he was having an affair with Ellie’s teacher, Miss Allen, which began shortly after they met. But that wasn’t the whole story. Before they moved, Nathan had been involved with another woman who began demanding more from him than just being his mistress, prompting his decision to change jobs and relocate.

At that moment, Dani knew her marriage was over.

In the days that followed, Dani transferred Ellie to another school. She needed to protect and cherish her daughter, ensuring she wasn’t caught in the middle of her father’s extramarital affairs.

Dani filed for divorce and moved to a new house, allowing Nathan to visit their daughter whenever he wishes.
