Woman ends marriage upon discovering husband calls her ‘SWMBO’ in texts to friends

A strong marriage is founded on mutual understanding, appreciation, and love between partners. Unfortunately, there are times when one partner’s actions reflect a lack of care for the relationship, which can lead to ongoing conflicts and even separation.

One woman shared her story on MamaMia, revealing how her five-year marriage ended after she accidentally came across a message from her husband to his friends. In that message, he used a nickname for her that made her feel as though she had been “slapped in the face.”

At that time, their son was just 2 years old, and her husband would frequently be away without informing her of his whereabouts or whom he was with, simply because he felt “he didn’t need to.”

She made every effort to justify his actions, understanding that he was the primary earner. Wanting to support him, she even borrowed money from her parents to help fund his business, while allowing him the personal downtime he seemed to need.

Her husband had always been this way, and despite her hopes that things would change after the birth of their son, nothing improved.

In her letter to the outlet, she explained, “He still had his long Friday lunches, which inevitably turned into Friday night drinks, all in the name of networking. And his Thursday night sports? He never missed a single week.”

Additionally, he never expressed any desire to be more involved in her or their son’s life.

One Friday morning, while her husband was in the shower, his phone kept buzzing. Thinking it might be something important, she decided to check it.

What she stumbled upon was a text message to his friends that read, “Don’t think I can make it tonight. SWMBO will say no.”

She was puzzled by the message, unsure of its meaning, though she was certain it referred to her.

When she asked her husband about it, he responded casually, saying, “It means ‘She Who Must Be Obeyed.’”

The woman was devastated. She felt as though he saw her not as a partner, but as a controlling figure, while he acted like a rebellious teenager sneaking out to have fun with his friends.

“After five years of marriage, this is how he saw me,” she wrote. “The one thing I ever asked of him—just some accountability about where he was—was apparently too much. And he talked about me like that to his friends.”

Feeling “mortified” by the nickname, and noticing that no one in the chat questioned the abbreviation—suggesting he had used it before—she realized there was “no coming back from that.” Their relationship no longer felt like a marriage or what a family should be.

“I knew I could never, ever kiss—let alone sleep with—a man who called me that after 10 years together, even after I became the mother of his son,” she wrote. At that moment, she realized both she and her son deserved better. Living in a relationship where she wasn’t valued, in a place where she was supposed to be loved, was not the life she had imagined. So, she made the decision to take her child and leave her husband.

Her story gained widespread attention, sparking mixed reactions from people about the choice she made.
