Grandma Somboon, plucked from the wild as a mere infant, endured a staggering 80 years in the relentless grind of the logging and tourism industries. Her existence was defined by ceaseless toil, ferrying tourists around and laboring tirelessly, leaving scant moments for her own respite. Upon learning of Somboon’s plight, the Save Elephant Foundation was moved to intervene.
Via a Facebook post, the rescue organization emphasized the imperative of granting Grandma the care she deserves and affording her the chance to finally rest. Presently, our mission is centered on a critical rescue operation aimed at securing Somboon’s well-being and facilitating her safe relocation to a more fitting habitat.
In late January, Somboon was liberated from the confines of her lifelong labor and transported to the sanctuary of Elephant Nature Park. Upon her arrival, Somboon presented a gaunt figure, displaying signs of wear with missing teeth and parched, scaly skin. Nevertheless, a palpable sense of relief emanated from her, as if she instinctively recognized that she was at last in a place of safety and refuge.
According to the rescue organization, it’s common for newly arrived elephants to take weeks to acclimate and trust enough to lie down comfortably. Yet, Grandma Somboon defied this pattern. Despite a lengthy journey and numerous challenges, she swiftly located the sand pile designated for her and peacefully drifted into a deep slumber, unfazed by the lively activity surrounding her.
Having spent a lifetime on her feet, Somboon was elated to discover a haven where she felt cherished and could finally indulge in a much-needed respite.
Following an extended period of rest, Somboon encountered difficulty getting back on her feet upon awakening. Thankfully, her rescuers promptly rushed to her aid, providing the necessary support to help her stand. They have remained vigilant, closely monitoring her well-being ever since.
Grandma Somboon is gracefully adapting to her new sanctuary abode. Amidst a journey of recovery from past hardships, she relishes in nourishing meals, tranquil walks, and luxuriating in ample mud baths. Embracing the life she was meant for, she radiates joy to those instrumental in making her dreams come true.
