“Tom sends me a birthday gift every year and has been doing so since that birthday,” Fanning shared in a recent interview. She reminisced about how Cruise initiated the tradition with a memorable gift while they were filming ‘War of the Worlds’ together.
Dakota Fanning has been actively promoting her Netflix series Ripley, where she stars alongside Andrew Scott. During a recent interview, she shared the story of how she received her very first cellphone.
Scott and Fanning engaged in a game together where Scott was asked, “Who gave Dakota her first cell phone?” He guessed, “Okay, well, it’s going to be some Hollywood icon… Tom Cruise?” His guess was accurate, as Fanning confirmed that Cruise had indeed gifted her a Motorola Razr, her first cellphone.

“Oh, my God, I was so excited,” she recalled what it felt like to get such an amazing birthday present from the movie star.
Even though she “didn’t have anybody to call or text at that time,” it still felt cool for her to walk around with her very own flip phone.
“You know, I was 11,” she justified. “But I loved having it. I loved it. I felt so cool.”

She shared that since her 2005 film with him, she has observed Cruise’s thoughtfulness. She noted that the actor has remembered her birthday each year since they worked on War of the Worlds together. Cruise not only remembered, but also consistently sent her a present.
“Tom has sent me a birthday gift every year since that birthday,” she said, referring to her recent 30th birthday. “It’s so thoughtful and kind,” she added, praising Cruise.
“That’s lovely, he’s never given me anything,” Scott joked, then turned to look directly at the camera.
