For years, people have sought ways to protect their properties from vandals and trespassers.
Some opted to hang signs warning others not to trespass. However, since these signs are often destroyed or removed by vandals, property owners have adopted a new method to convey the message: “Stay out,” by painting their fences purple.
In fact, using a purple-painted fence as a no-trespassing sign is regulated by law in several U.S. states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Other states, like Idaho and Montana, use orange paint for the same purpose.
But why is purple the most suitable color? It stands out clearly, is highly visible, and is even recognizable by people who are color blind.
Using purple paint to mark property boundaries is not a new idea. In fact, it has been around for many years. Arkansas was the first state to enact “posting paint” legislation in 1989.
For instance, in Texas, purple paint on posts or trees indicates that the land is off-limits to all trespassers. In North Carolina, however, it means that outdoor enthusiasts can cross the boundaries as long as they refrain from fishing, hunting, or trapping.
So, whenever you are outdoors, be sure to watch for fences or trees painted purple to avoid any trouble.

Trespassing is punishable by law in most countries, and the law dates back to medieval England.
Punishments for such crimes can include jail time ranging from months to years, and fines can reach up to $10,000 in certain jurisdictions.
When a property owner decides to use purple paint to protect their property, they must follow specific guidelines.
The purple stripes should be vertical, at least 1 inch wide, 8 inches long, positioned 3 to 5 feet above the ground, and spaced no more than 100 feet apart.
If you are using it on trees, be sure to avoid oil-based paint as it can cause harm to them.
It’s also crucial to spread awareness about the meaning of purple-painted fences. This helps in effectively protecting property, plants, people, and wildlife.
Always remember to respect and preserve private property.
