It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of this legendary actor

Actor Robert Blake has passed away at the age of 89, as reported by Deadline. The news was shared by his niece, Noreen Austin.

Blake died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, following a battle with ongoing heart issues, according to Austin (via Fox News). In his final years, he found comfort in watching old movies, playing his guitar, and listening to jazz music.

Blake enjoyed a long and successful career in Hollywood, which began in the late 1930s.

He first appeared on screen as a child actor in an uncredited role in the 1939 film “Bridal Suite.” Over the years, Blake amassed nearly 150 acting credits, with his most notable performances in “In Cold Blood” and “Baretta,” which defined his career during the 1960s and 1970s.

Throughout his career, Blake earned four Emmy nominations and won one for his role in “Baretta.” His last dramatic performance was in the 1997 film “Lost Highway.”

With his passing, Blake joins the ranks of notable figures who have recently died. While some are reflecting on the troubling events that marked the latter part of his life, including the serious crime he was accused of, others are mourning the end of his distinguished and lengthy career.

Robert Blake’s life took a tragic turn in May 2001 when his second wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, was killed. Bakley was found dead in Blake’s car, “slumped in the front seat,” according to LAPD Online. At the time of her death, Bakley was 44 years old—23 years younger than Blake—and had been married to him for just one year, though it was her 10th marriage overall. The world was shocked when, 11 months later, Blake was arrested and charged with Bakley’s murder, as reported by ABC News. “We can confirm that Robert Blake has been detained in connection with his wife’s death,” said police spokesman Officer Don Cox at the time.

Blake has consistently denied any involvement in Bakley’s death. He claims that after their dinner, he left her in the car and returned to find her already dead. According to CNN, Blake maintained this account throughout the court proceedings and during the year he spent in jail before posting a $1.5 million bond. In a 2003 interview with Barbara Walters, Blake suggested that Bakley’s death was linked to her past. “In my heart, I believe that some man from her past—maybe 10, 15, or even 20 years ago—who had been affected by her, was responsible,” Blake said (via ABC News). “She had a history of ruining lives, and I think that someone whose life she had devastated might have seen her on television.”

On March 29, 2005, Blake was found not guilty of the murder accusation; nonetheless, his reputation was never restored.
