‘Dancing With the Stars’ icon passed away today

Len Goodman has died at the age of 78.

He was a judge on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Former English ballroom dancer, who competed from 2005 to 2018, passed away on Saturday at a hospice in Kent, southern England, following a prolonged battle with bone cancer.

His manager, Jackie Gill, shared with CNN on Monday that Goodman was surrounded by numerous family members at the time of his passing.

Born in London in 1944, Goodman began dancing at the age of 19 and built a career as a professional dancer before moving into television, according to his website.

Goodman served as the head judge on the British version of “Dancing With the Stars,” BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing,” from its debut in 2004 until his final appearance on Christmas Day 2016. After his departure, Shirley Ballas stepped in to fill his role.

Tributes poured in, with BBC director-general Tim Davie leading the way, describing Goodman as a “wonderful, warm entertainer who was loved by millions.”

Davie added, “He was cherished by people of all ages and had a unique way of making everyone feel like part of his family.” Len was a key factor in Strictly’s immense popularity, and he will be deeply missed by the public, his numerous friends, family, and all who knew him.

Bruno Tonioli, another judge on “Dancing With The Stars,” posted a touching picture of himself and Goodman holding hands and wrote, “Hart broken my dear friend and partner for 19 years the one and only ballroom LEGEND #LenGoodman passed away I will treasure the memories of our adventures @bbcstrictly @officialdwts there will never be anyone like you you will always be my perfect 10.”

Beyond television, Goodman operated the Goodman Dance Academy in Kent. His autobiography, Better Late Than Never: From Barrow Boy to Ballroom, was published in 2009. He also authored Dancing Around Britain and Lost London.
